Asheville Man Dies In Kayaking Accident On Green River (Asheville, NC)

A 20-year-old Asheville man who got caught in rapids on the Green River in Polk County is dead.  Investigators say Matthew Ray was out kayaking with friends when he was overcome by the force of the rapids on Saturday.  An A.C. Reynolds High School classmate told WLOS that Matthew was one of the best paddlers.  The location of the Green River Narrows is reportedly one of the most difficult areas for emergency workers to navigate.  

Agents Raid Businesses Statewide (Undated)

North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement says agents raided locations across the state in weekend alcohol and drug busts.  The owner of a private Asheville club called Ellington Underground in downtown was among those arrested on drug charges.  Two illegal bars and a moonshine distillery were also raided in the eastern part of the state.  More than 200 charges were handed out to over 130 people in the operation.  

Suspect Accused Of Strangling Woman (Asheville, NC)

A suspect is in jail for violating a protective order and allegedly beating a woman in Black Mountain.  Thomas Hughey is accused of wrapping a belt around the neck of a woman and dragging her into a bedroom.  The victim had previously taken out a domestic protective order against Hughey, who reportedly threatened to kill her earlier this year.  Black Mountain Police took him to jail for felony assault charges and false imprisonment.  

Candler Man Facing More Charges Of Sex Crimes (Candler, NC)

A Candler man is being accused of sexually abusing a two-year-old earlier this year.  Matthew Duncan was already in the Buncombe County Detention Center on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography.  The 28-year-old now faces a felony charge of engaging in a sex act with a child.  The pornography charges are a federal offense and he will remain in jail.  

Car Crashes Into Fletcher Home (Fletcher, NC)

Police say an SUV plowed into a Fletcher home over the weekend.  The driver allegedly lost control coming down a hill on Grove End Road.  The car slammed through a garage, damaging the home and a car parked inside.  The homeowners said they had been standing near the garage only moments before.  No one was injured, but the home is uninhabitable.  

Fire Halfway Contained Near Hot Springs (Hot Springs, NC)

Fire crews are still battling a blaze along the Appalachian Trail.  Latest reports reveal that the wildfire is around 50 percent contained along the trail between Garenflo Gap and Hot Springs.  The damaged area still remains around 50 acres.  It's been a week since the fire was first reported.  Rangers say firefighters have been battling fire right at the line while helicopters drop water on hot spots.  

Charlotte Murder Suspect Nabbed In Florida (Charlotte, NC)

A Charlotte murder suspect is now in the hands of police in Florida.  Jacksonville patrol officers arrested Joseph Tyrell Abercrombie after he had been on the run from state-to-state for months.  He is accused in the shooting death of Antwain Maurice Price on Thomasboro Drive last December.  The CMPD is headed to Jacksonville and expects to extradite him back to Charlotte soon.
