Five NC Governors Against Two Constitutional Amendments (Raleigh, NC)

North Carolina's five living former governors are taking a stand against two constitutional amendments slated to go on the November ballot.  They gathered in Raleigh yesterday to voice disapproval of a proposal they say would weaken the governor's authority to fill judicial vacancies.  The other proposal they are against would switch the power for state board appointments from the governor to the legislature.  Republican leaders said in return that the proposals are a more accountable approach to filling vacancies. 

Troopers:  Motorcycle Traveling 100 MPH Before Crash (Marion, NC)

 State troopers say a motorcycle reached speeds of around 100-miles-an-hour before it collided head-on with a van in Marion.  A Swannanoa man allegedly veered into the opposite lane around a curve on Highway 80 Sunday afternoon.  The collision killed the man and sent the van spinning into two other motorcycles.  Three others were taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville for injuries.    

Suspect Arrested For Attempted Murder (Mills River, NC)

One man is charged with attempted first-degree murder in a dispute with Henderson County sheriff's deputies.  Investigators say shots were fired in the direction of deputies after they came out to a call near the Mills River Community Center building last weekend.  A 21-year-old man from Horse Shoe reportedly became combative and resisted arrest.  His dog was shot and killed after it bit a deputy.    

Judge Grants Attorney Access To Body Camera Video (Asheville, NC)

A Buncombe County superior court judge is granting an attorney access to body camera footage from a four-hour traffic stop.  The attorney's client, Marcus Hyatt, and another man were released without charges after the stop in which they were strip searched.  Deputies applied for a warrant to do the searches after finding the men had previous drug convictions.  Asheville's Black Lives Matter president says the strip searches went too far.    

Suspect Arrested For Rash Of Breaking And Entering (Buncombe County, NC)

An Arden man is facing charges for breaking into a number of cars at a Buncombe County auto repair shop.  The suspect was arrested on 17 counts of felony breaking and entering, most of which happened at the Buck Shoals Road shop at the end of July.  He was also tied to another theft at a gas station two days before.   

Oak Tree Removed After Vandalism (Asheville, NC)

A Duke Energy official says a giant oak tree had to be removed in south Asheville yesterday after it was vandalized and nearly sawed in half.  The tree was at risk of falling over power lines at the corner of Mills Gap and Sweeten Creek Roads, next to a construction site for a new apartment complex.  It was slated to come down soon due to a DOT widening project.  The estimated age of the tree was nearly 200-years-old.  

Nail Salon Employees Charged With Assault (Davidson, NC)

Two suspects accused of human trafficking at their Davidson business are now charged with aggravated assault.  Investigators say the pair assaulted a 57-year-old woman at Luxury Nail Salon in July.  This follows their June arrests for human trafficking and involuntary servitude.  Police are continuing to look for more possible witnesses. 

Statutory Rape Suspect Accused Of Having Weapon Of Mass Destruction (Charlotte, NC)

A Charlotte man facing charges of indecent liberties with a juvenile is also accused of possessing a weapon of mass destruction.  WBTV is reporting that officers found the minor inside the suspect's home after the child went missing early Friday.  The CMPD has not gone into detail about the weapon found at the home.  The 28-year-old man was charged on seven counts, including kidnapping and statutory rape.
