Candler Man Arrested For Deadly Hit-And-Run

(Candler, NC) -- A Candler man is facing charges in connection to a deadly hit-and-run last weekend. He was arrested after state troopers received a tip on Monday. A man visiting Western North Carolina from New York died after being hit by a car on Monte Vista Road late Saturday night. The suspect was charged with felony hit-and-run and three other counts.

Former Asheville Baseball Player Arrested For DUI

(Scottsdale, AZ) -- A former Asheville baseball standout is being charged with DUI in Arizona. Ex-Roberson High star Cameron Maybin allegedly registered a blood alcohol content almost twice the legal limit after he was pulled over in Scottsdale last week. The San Francisco Giants signed Maybin to a minor league contract for this season. He told police that he had five glasses of wine that night before he got behind the wheel.

Cooper Wants Nine Percent Teacher Pay Raise

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper wants North Carolina teachers to be the highest paid in the southeast. He revealed details on his education plan in budget talks yesterday. The Democrat is asking lawmakers to approve a nine-percent raise over the course of two years. Teachers with advanced degrees would also be paid more under Cooper's proposal.

BRP Is Second Most Visited National Parks Site

(Haywood County, NC) -- The Blue Ridge Parkway is no longer the most visited spot among the country's National Park sites. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco took back the top spot for 2018. The parkway had around a million-and-a-half less visitors for the year compared with 2017. The two sites have generally traded the top two spots back and forth for 40 years.

Marion Walmart Employee Named Citizen Of Month

(Marion, NC) -- A longtime Walmart greeter is one western North Carolina city's Citizen of the Month. Marion officials honored Jay Melton with the announcement last night. Melton made national headlines after he found out he was losing his job as a greeter and thousands signed an online petition in his support. He got some good news last week when the Marion Walmart hired him into another position as self-checkout host.

Wind Chills Lead To School Delays

(Undated) -- Some schools in the region are delaying class today due to wind chills. Avery, Haywood, Madison and Mitchell counties will all start class two hours later. Jackson County's Smoky Mountain District is also on a two-hour delay, while the Blue Ridge District will begin two-and-a-half hours later. Wind chills in high elevations this morning could feel below zero.

Baby Dies After Dog Attack In Salisbury

(Salisbury, NC) -- Investigators say a six-month-old was mauled to death by a dog in Salisbury yesterday. A babysitter had allegedly gone outside her home on Wilson Road to clean out the back seat of her car when the boxer-pit bull mix dog attacked. Salisbury police said the babysitter ran back inside when the child's mother began screaming. The baby died at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

More Suspects Arrested In Election Fraud Investigation

(Raleigh, NC) -- Four more people are facing charges connected to the election fraud investigation in the 9th Congressional District. Three have been arrested since Saturday for conspiracy to commit felony obstruction of justice and possession of absentee ballots. The SBI is still looking for one suspect. Political operative McRae Dowless was the first person arrested in relation to the investigation last week, which led to the call for a new election in the district.

Duke Energy Fires Back Against Environmental Report

(Charlotte, NC) -- Duke Energy is criticizing a recent environmental study for giving out misleading information. The Environmental Integrity Project and Earthjustice reported that cobalt from coal ash dumps at Belmont's Allen Steam Station is leaking into groundwater more than 500 times over the safe level. The power company says that drinking water around Duke facilities are well-protected.

Man Who Allegedly Assaulted Two Women Accused Again

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD says a man suspected of assaulting two women last Saturday also beat a 78-year-old man two days before. Eugene Hazen is accused of pulling the man out of his car at the Food Lion on Beatties Ford Road last Thursday and hitting him with a metal object. He is already facing charges in the assault of two women just hours apart on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte. Court records reveal that Hazen was released from jail in February for another assault and kidnapping.

Closing Arguments Today In Borum Murder Trial

(Charlotte, NC) -- Closing arguments will be heard today in the murder trial of Rayquan Borum. He's accused of murdering a man outside the Omni Hotel during the Charlotte riots in 2016. Borum decided not to take the stand yesterday to testify in front of the jury. The judge turned down the defense's request to have the jury consider manslaughter when they deliberate.

Charlotte Mayor In DC Today

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles is in Washington, DC today for the first meeting of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board. She's one of nearly 30 people chosen to address ways to create better jobs for American workers. The board is composed mostly of company CEOs and university administrators.

A Raleigh Radio Host Loses 8 Family Members To Alabama Tornadoes

(Raleigh, NC) -- A Raleigh radio host lost eight family members in Alabama this week. Sports radio host Errol Reese is from Birmingham, and he says on Monday he learned that eight of his relatives in Lee County, Alabama were killed by tornadoes. He says he's going down to help in any way he can. More than 20-thousand-dollars have already been raised through a GoFundMe for his first-cousin Ernestine who survived.

NC DMV Headquarters Is Closer To Moving To Rocky Mount

(Raleigh, NC) -- It looks like North Carolina is one step closer to moving the state DMV headquarters. The Council of State approved the move to a new complex in Rocky Mount yesterday. Many DMV employees are worried about the commute, it could be an hour in each direction. This isn't a done deal, a lease agreement for the new headquarters still needs to be drafted and approved by state lawmakers.

A Man Is Charged With Attempted Murder After Apparently Shooting At A Trooper

(Orange Co., NC) -- An Orange County man is accused of shooting at a State Trooper. Police say Trooper Evan Dix tried to pull over 20-year-old Tyler Grantz on I-40 East for speeding yesterday morning, but he crashed trying to get away. State Police say Grantz fired a gun at the officer and ran away. The officer wasn't hit. The car was stolen, and among the charges against Grantz is attempted murder of a police officer. He's behind bars on one-million-dollars bond.

Two More Arrests Are Made In Connection To District 9 Race Election Fraud Investigation

(New Hanover Co., NC) -- Two more arrests have been made in connection to election fraud in North Carolina's Ninth Congressional District. McCrae Dowless had already been free on bond when he was arraigned yesterday on election-related charges. Tonia Gordon and Matthew Mathis were also charged with felonious obstruction of justice and illegal possession of an absentee ballot. They were indicted with Dowless accused of illegally collecting absentee ballots.

Openly Gay Durham Councilwoman Speaks At Her Old Catholic School

(Durham, NC) -- An openly gay Durham city councilwoman is finally getting to speak at her alma mater. Vernetta Alston was set to speak at Immaculata Catholic School last month for Black History Month, but her appearance was canceled over threats of protests. There were no protests and yesterday she got to speak at the Catholic school. Alston said the decision to cancel her appearance hurt, but says they're in a place to celebrate and grow from the experience.

Raleigh Ranks Second Best City To Live In A Millennial Survey

(undated) -- According to a study of Millennials, Raleigh is the second best city to live in America. Liveability-dot-com reports that they surveyed one-thousand Millennials about things like economics, demographics, and education in more than a thousand-cities. Boise, Idaho was the only city that ranked higher than Raleigh. The website praised North Carolina's Capitol about how much there is for folks to do. They also touted the city's clean, green and entrepreneurial nature. Greenville, South Carolina also ranked in the list's top ten.

Baby Attacked By Dog In Salisbury

(Salisbury, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Salisbury after a baby was mauled to death by his babysitter's dog. It happened yesterday afternoon at the babysitter's home near Wilson and Old Plank roads. Police say the babysitter's boxer/pit bull mix attacked the six-month-old boy while he was sitting in her living room. He died at the hospital. Animal control took custody of the dog.

Student Accused Of Making Threats, Bringing Bullets To School

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A 13-year-old student in Winston-Salem is accused of bringing bullets to school and making threats. The student attends Northwest Middle School. Officers were investigating a case of disorderly conduct when they noticed multiple bullets inside the student's book bag. Police say the student did not threaten fellow students, rather law enforcement officers at the scene and school administrators. Criminal charges are pending.

Two Juveniles Under Arrest On Suspicion Of Stealing Car

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two kids are in custody on suspicion of stealing a car in Winston-Salem. The vehicle was reported stolen yesterday from Akron Mart on Akron Drive. Police traced it to the area of First and Graham streets. Both the juvenile driver and juvenile passenger were arrested.

Suspect Wanted In Randolph Co. Stabbing

(Randolph Co. NC) -- Randolph County deputies are looking for the suspect in connection with a stabbing. Thirty-year-old Julio Palacios is accused of stabbing a woman in the Northside Terrace area on Monday. The victim told police Palacios fled to a neighbor's home after the stabbing. He's still at large. Palacios is wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries.

Person Shot In Road-Rage Incident In Randolph Co.

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A person is recovering after a road-rage shooting in Randolph County. The scene unfolded last night near Mack and McDowell roads, southwest of Asheboro. Authorities say the victim was shot in the arm. They have not released any information about a possible suspect. An investigation is underway.
