State Introduces Safety App For Next School Year

(Raleigh, NC) -- Students will have a new way to report school safety concerns next school year in North Carolina. State superintendent Mark Johnson says students, parents and teachers can download an app called Say Something Anonymous. A command center operated by the group Sandy Hook Promise will monitor any tips that come through the app. Johnson says the app will act like eyes on the ground.

Jackson County Teacher Resigns During Investigation

(Jackson County, NC) -- A Jackson County teacher is out of a job as a criminal investigation into inappropriate conduct continues. Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Elliott says a teacher at Jackson County Early College has surrendered his teaching license. The alleged actions didn't happen on school campus. The sheriff's office is continuing to look into the allegations, but details are limited.

Concert To Benefit Families Of Wreck Victims Tomorrow

(Barnardsville, NC) -- A concert is planned in Buncombe County tomorrow to help benefit the Western North Carolina families of recent wreck victims. Three people died last weekend when their off-road vehicle went off a 100-foot embankment in Tennessee. Country musician Buddy Jewell will take the stage at The Barn at Paint Fork in Barnardsville, with all proceeds going to the families. Two of the victims were North Buncombe High School graduates.

Five Arrested In Henderson County Drug Bust

(Henderson County, NC) -- Five suspects are facing charges in a Henderson County drug bust. Drug task force agents and SWAT teams executed search warrants at two East Flat Rock homes yesterday. A variety of drugs, drug paraphernalia and a firearm were seized in the raid.

Asheville Reports Fake Government Facebook Account

(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville wants you to be on the lookout for fake government accounts on Facebook. A fake account called City of Asheville Government was spotted and reported to the social media company yesterday. The trickster had already started responding to residents' comments by the time the hoax was found. The city's official Facebook page is Asheville City Government.

Electric Buses Hitting Asheville Roads This Weekend

(Asheville, NC) -- New electric buses are hitting the road in Asheville. The city says five buses will be used on three transit routes beginning Saturday. They were purchased as part of an effort to reduce the city's carbon footprint. Asheville originally planned eight new electric buses on the road by the end of the year, but they'll stick with five for now.

Classroom In UNC Charlotte Shooting Won't Be Used Next Semester

Mother Charged After Son Left In Car

(Charlotte, NC) -- A mother is facing charges for allegedly leaving her toddler son inside her car yesterday in Charlotte. The CMPD says the three-year-old was brought into Northlake Mall by a customer after getting out of the parked car on his own. NBC Charlotte is reporting the temperature was at 93 degrees when that happened. The mother was charged with misdemeanor child neglect. It's unclear how long the boy was in the car.

Truck Crashes Into Gaston County Home, Driver Dies

(Gastonia, NC) -- Gaston County police are investigating a death after a truck crashed into a home yesterday. Witnesses told police that the truck was zig-zagging through the neighborhood before it hit a home on Linsbury Court. NBC Charlotte is reporting the driver died.

Hot Temps Begin To Ease Today

(Charlotte, NC) -- Record-high temperatures should start to drop a little in Charlotte today. WBTV is reporting that yesterday's high of 95 tied a record for May 30th that's stood for over 100 years. The National Weather Service is calling for highs to top out at 89 today with a small chance of showers in the afternoon. The thermostat has reached at least 90 every day for the last week.

Deputies Seek Man Who Ran Away From Wreck

(Caldwell County, NC) -- Caldwell County deputies are looking for a man who ran away from a wreck. Terry Daniel Ray hasn't been seen since he left the accident scene on foot on Grace Chapel Road north of Hickory Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say he could be injured. There's no reason to consider him a threat.

ACC Baseball Tournament Coming To Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- The ACC baseball tournament is coming to Charlotte next year. The Charlotte Knights said yesterday that they've been chosen to host the five-day event at BB&T Ballpark in uptown. Body Of Teen Recovered From Durham Quarry

(Durham, NC) -- The body of a teen has been recovered from a Durham quarry. A group of Eno River Academy students and recent graduates jumped into the quarry at Eno River State Park earlier this week, but 18-year-old Nick Brown didn't surface. Yesterday, search crews located Brown's body. The school reopened this week for a gathering in honor of Brown.

Kyron Hinton May Have Been Strangled To Death For Settlement Money

(Raleigh, NC) -- Kyron Hinton's death is being ruled a homicide. He was the subject of a viral video last year where several law enforcement officers in Wake County beat him brutally. Hinton was awarded an 83-thousand-dollar settlement in February, but died one day later. The autopsy report says he died of cocaine toxicity and strangulation injuries. His death has been ruled a homicide, and family members think Hinton was murdered for his money. The death is still under investigation.

Hand Found After Body Recovered Was Accidentally Dropped

(Nash Co., NC) -- Deputies in Nash County are explaining why a human hand was found near a site where human remains were found. They say last month they recovered the body of 51-year-old Sarah Patterson from a shallow grave. Deputies say that when her body was recovered, contact caused the skin from her hand to de-glove, and accidentally leave that tissue behind. Medical authorities say the body was otherwise intact. Her 44-year-old nephew Cleavon Williams is charged with first-degree murder.

Harnett County Man Accused Of Setting Fire To House, Killing Another

(Harnett Co., NC) -- A Harnett County man is accused of setting fire to his house and killing a man. Deputies say yesterday they got a call from Wanda Wood, who claimed her West Broadway home was on fire and her husband was trapped inside. Fifty-seven-year-old Anthony Wood was found dead inside. Investigators believed that the fire was set intentionally by someone who lived there. Wood's 34-year-old son, Jacob Killinger, was arrested and charged with murder and arson. He's due in court today.

Cops Search For Fayetteville Rapists

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Police in Fayetteville are looking for two alleged rapists. They say on Tuesday, two black men offered the victim a ride on Raeford Road. She was driven to Skibo Road in a red four door sedan and raped. Both men are believed to be in their late 20s and have short dreadlocks. Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Headless Body Found In Wilkesboro

(Wilkesboro, NC) -- Police in Wilkesboro are working to identify a headless body. The gruesome discovery was made late last week in the woods near Mountain View Apartments. Police say the victim was wearing a green jacket, khaki pants and brown boots. There were also no hands. Police Chief Craig Garris says they do not suspect criminal activity at this time.

Construction Gets Underway On "Project Slugger"

(Greensboro, NC) -- Construction will begin immediately on Greensboro's new downtown office tower. It's called "Project Slugger," and Front Street Capital announced plans for its groundbreaking yesterday. Amazon Confirms Fulfillment Center In Kernersville

(Kernersville, NC) -- Amazon is confirming plans for a fulfillment center in Kernersville in 2020. It's the first time since the online retail giant has commented on the project since last July when it signed a lease for a site off Old Greensboro Road. Amazon tells "Fox 8" the site will employ one-thousand full-time workers. Landscaping and construction have been going on for several months.

Greensboro Father Accused Of Starving His Children

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro father is accused of starving his children and refusing to take them to the doctor. Titus McClenton is charged with felony child abuse. According to court documents, his two, ten and 12-year-old kids were deprived of food and medical care, causing malnutrition and other health concerns. McClenton is in the Guilford County Jail, and the children are with their grandmother.

Randolph Co. Home Catches Fire

(Randolph Co., NC) -- No one is hurt after a fire badly damaged a Randolph County home. It happened Wednesday night on King View Drive, near Seagrove. The homeowner tells "FOX 8" her son left the stove on while they went for a walk. It's not clear how much damage the fire caused, but the homeowner says the roof did collapse.
