Asheville Man Found Guilty Of Murder

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is guilty of killing his pregnant girlfriend in 2016. Nathaniel Dixon could now face the death penalty for the murder of Candace Pickens. Prosecutors say he gunned down Pickens in Jones Park, killing her and her unborn child. The jury convicted Dixon for Pickens' murder, but found him not guilty in the death of the unborn child. The sentencing hearing begins Monday morning.

One Dead In Buncombe County Plane Crash

(Fairview, NC) -- The FAA is investigating a deadly plane crash in Buncombe County. A small single-engine aircraft went down near Lower Brush Creek Road in Fairview yesterday morning, just a mile away from Six Oaks Airport in Asheville. Another person was on board the plane at the time of the crash, but their condition is unknown. It's unclear at this time where the plane's flight originated.

Missing Fisherman Found Dead On French Broad River

(Madison County, NC) -- Madison County investigators are confirming that a missing fisherman was found dead on the French Broad River yesterday. Family members say Ryan McClure, of Weaverville, disappeared after going fishing on the river a few miles away from Marshall on Sunday. The Citizen-Times is reporting a volunteer crew found McClure's body. He was the father of a six-year-old boy and a Navy vet.

Suspect Arrested After Jumping In Lake During Chase

(Asheville, NC) -- One man who allegedly jumped into a lake while running away from Asheville police is now in jail. Investigators told WLOS-TV that they were trying to arrest Darrien Carver for breaking into a car yesterday afternoon when he got away. He fled into Lake Kenilworth and had to be pulled out by officers. Carver was accused of trying to resist arrest while they were in the lake.

Bond Reduced For Woman Accused In Attempted Murder

(Polk County, NC) -- A judge is agreeing to reduce the bond for an Asheville woman accused of faking the kidnapping of her infant daughter. The bond for Krista Madden was lowered from 750-thousand-dollars to 100-thousand dollars in Polk County court yesterday. She was arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly throwing her daughter into a ravine in May. The judge ordered that Madden cannot have direct contact with her two children.

Governor Signs Bill Allowing Alcohol At College Sports Events

(Raleigh, NC) -- UNC system schools can now sell beer and wine at sporting events. Governor Cooper signed off on a bill to allow alcohol sales at stadiums and athletic fields yesterday. The decision to take advantage of alcohol sales now rests with the individual school. Western Carolina University officials say school leaders are weighing the pros and cons of the legislation and leaves the final decision to its Board of Trustees.

Two Teens Arrested For Murder At Uptown Party

(Charlotte, NC) -- Two teenagers are facing murder charges for a shooting outside an uptown apartment complex two weeks ago. The CMPD says one man was gunned down outside Post Uptown Place on North Graham Street while a graduation party was going on. The 16- and 19-year-old suspects were arrested on Wednesday. Three other people were injured in the shooting.

Former Principal Investigated For Child Pornography

(Lincolnton, NC) -- A former Lincoln County principal is being investigated for possible child pornography and indecent liberties with a student. A probable cause affidavit obtained by NBC Charlotte reveals Tony Worley allegedly sent nude pics and explicit messages to a current student through social media apps this spring. He hasn't been arrested yet. Worley resigned as principal of Linconlton High School on Tuesday a few days after the district suspended him.

UNC Charlotte To Launch Pilot Program For Alcohol Sales

(Charlotte, NC) -- UNC Charlotte is taking advantage of a new law which allows public universities to sell alcohol at sporting events. Governor Cooper signed the legislation yesterday. The university's Board of Trustees has approved plans to run a one-year pilot program beginning this fall for the sale of beer and wine for certain sports. It is expected to be available for purchase at football, baseball, basketball and soccer games.

Loaded Gun Found At Summer School

(Charlotte, NC) -- A student is being accused of bringing a loaded gun to summer school in Charlotte yesterday. CMS says the weapon was found during a safety screening at Rocky River High School. The campus is accommodating students from multiple area high schools for summer classes. All students and staff were reported to be safe.

Mecklenburg County Asking Residents To Separate Glass For Recycling

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Changes are coming to the recycling program in Mecklenburg County at the beginning of July. Residents are being urged to separate out glass containers into new yellow bins at the county's recycling centers. It's part of a move to make sure recycled bottles are clean and uncontaminated, which is required by the Georgia company currently purchasing from Mecklenburg County. They'll otherwise charge a fee for cleaning the glass containers. Curbside recycling isn't changing at this time.

German Beer Company To Open Brewery In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- A German brewer is planning to use Charlotte as its first U.S. location. The Charlotte Observer reported yesterday that Gilde will open a 100-thousand-square-foot brewery that can produce up to 500-thousand barrels of beer a year, but the exact location is unknown. The company's CEO, who lives in Cornelius, says they will first open up a five-thousand-square foot microbrewery by the end of this year before moving on to the bigger project. Gilde has been in the beer business for almost 500 years.

Anti-Sanctuary City Bill Passes NC House

(Raleigh, NC) -- An anti-sanctuary city bill has passed the state House. State Bill 135 also permits lawsuits against those who are in violation. Opponents of the bill say it was unnecessary, since sanctuary cities are already illegal in North Carolina. The bill will now move on to the Senate. The General Assembly recently passed another bill which requires that local law enforcement agencies cooperate with ICE.

(Raleigh, NC) -- An investigation is underway after a beloved youth center caught fire yesterday. Firefighters are not ruling out foul play at the Wilders Grove Youth Center off New Hope Road. The roof sustained significant damage, as did the new concession stand. The center has been a part of the community since the 1950s.

Raleigh Man Turns Self In For Child Porn

(Raleigh, NC) -- A Raleigh man accused of possessing child pornography has turned himself into authorities. Christopher Joseph Laczko is facing 12 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He reportedly confessed while officials were searching his home. Laczko has been issued a 400-thousand-dollar secured bond.

Worker Dies At Raleigh Elementary School After Being Electrocuted

(Raleigh, NC) -- An energy worker at a north Raleigh elementary school has died from electrocution. The man, whose name has not yet been released, worked for a company based in Virginia called Unique Environmental Energy Services. He was reportedly working on an air conditioning unit at Lead Mine Elementary School when the accident occurred.

GoTriangle CEO To Step Down July 31st

(Raleigh, NC) -- The president and CEO of GoTriangle will be stepping down next month. Jeff Mann was responsible for transit operations in five counties, including Wake, Durham, and Orange. He was also the face of the now-defunct Durham-Orange Light Rail proposal, which was ultimately scrapped back in April after already costing taxpayers millions of dollars. The GoTriangle Board of Trustees says Mann will leave his post on July 31st to pursue other opportunities and spend more time with his family.

2017 Death Of Man Visiting Dominican Republic May Be Linked

(Wake County, NC) -- A Wake County woman thinks her father's death two years ago may be related to the recent deaths in the Dominican Republic. Ten Americans have died so far while vacationing on the island. Jenaye Davenport says her father, Antonio Reyes, was healthy before leaving for the Bahia Principe resort in Punta Cana in the summer of 2017. The autopsy and death certificate say Reyes died of a heart attack, pulmonary edema, and respiratory issues. Davenport says his causes of death are very similar to the Americans who have died on the island so far.

High Point Martial Arts Instructor Facing Child Sex Charges

(High Point, NC) -- A High Point martial arts instructor is accused of having inappropriate relationships with his underage students. Marcos Medina-Ramirez is charged with four counts of statutory rape of a child by an adult. Police say the victims were under 15-years-old. Medina-Ramirez was an instructor at Tiger Kim's Tae Kwon Do but no longer works there.

Murder Charge Filed Against Driver In Deadly Wreck

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro man is charged with second-degree murder in connection with a deadly car accident. It happened last month on Lees Chapel Road. Police say Terrence Manning was driving the Dodge Journey that hit Varonda Manley, who was standing on the opposite side of the road. She died of her injuries. Manning was also charged with felony death by vehicle and DWI.

ICE Detains Suspect In Triple Alexander Co. Murder

(Alexander Co., NC) -- The man accused of killing a woman and her two children in Alexander County is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Areli Aguirre-Avilez is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Maria Calderon and her eleven and 12-year-old children. The kids were found dead in their burned home earlier this month. Investigators believe the mom's body is in the Catawba River.

Man Found Dead In Car ID'd

(Greensboro, NC) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Greensboro where a 36-year-old man was found dead inside a wrecked car. Police say Jaishon Banks was shot before his car crashed into a house early Tuesday morning. No one inside the home was hurt.

Toddler Bit By Dog At Guilford Co. Animal Center

(Greensboro, NC) -- A toddler is recovering from a dog bite at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Police say the two-year-old child was bitten by the Husky mix yesterday afternoon while the family was looking into adopting it. There's no word on how badly the child was hurt. The animal is being isolated for now.
