New Asheville Police Chief Stepping Down

(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville is already looking for a new police chief. Chris Bailey is stepping down effective September 24th for personal reasons. The former Indianapolis police officer just started in the Asheville department at the end of July. Robert White will serve as interim chief. The 40-year law enforcement veteran recently served as police chief in Denver.

NC House Republicans Override Governor's Budget Veto

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina Republicans are overriding Governor Roy Cooper's veto of the state's two-year budget while many Democrats were out of the chamber. House Democrats said Republicans deliberately misled them by saying there would be no votes on the morning of September 11th. The override is not complete, as it still must be voted on in the state Senate. Cooper said he vetoed the budget because it lacked Medicaid expansion and contained only small raises for teachers while giving tax breaks to corporations.

Closing Arguments In Swain County Murder Trial

(Swain County, NC) -- Closing arguments are continuing this morning in a Swain County murder trial. Alex Crisp is accused of shooting the mother of his young child to death more than five years ago in Bryson City. Defense attorneys have argued that the woman died of suicide. Jury deliberations will follow.

North Carolina Ranks Ninth In Rate Of Uninsured People

(Raleigh, NC) -- The number of uninsured people in North Carolina is up slightly from year-to-year. The U.S. Census released numbers this week that show nearly eleven-percent of the state's population didn't have health insurance at any point in 2018. That number ranks ninth overall in the U.S. Around 16-thousand more people were uninsured in 2018 than in 2017.

Burnsville Mother Arrested For Child Abuse

(Burnsville, NC) -- A Burnsville mother is facing felony child abuse charges. Her baby boy was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville with serious injuries last month, where a doctor ruled the child had most likely been abused. Bianca Esposito was arrested a week ago on the felony child abuse charge and two misdemeanors. It's unclear how the baby is doing.

Earthquake Hits Jackson County

(Jackson County, NC) -- Another earthquake is being confirmed in western North Carolina. A two-point-six magnitude quake was reported by the United States Geological Survey late last night outside of Cherokee in Jackson County. Several residents reported to WLOS-TV that they felt their homes shake. A earthquake of that magnitude generally doesn't cause any damage.

CMPD Investigating School Threat On Social Media

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is taking a look into a shooting threat against one school that surfaced on social media last night. NBC Charlotte is reporting a parent posted an image of a gun that was originally sent to her son. The message warned students not to show up at Coulwood Middle School today. Investigators were tracking down leads overnight. There's been no indication yet if any security measures will be altered today.

Father Charged After Daughter Found In Hot Car

(Shelby, NC) -- A Winston-Salem man is accused of leaving his daughter in the backseat of his car while shopping in Shelby. Police officers were able to pull the girl from the backseat before she suffered any serious injuries last Saturday. Her father was found inside the Aldi supermarket on Earl Road. Shelby police arrested him on a charge of misdemeanor child abuse. Temperatures reached the mid-90s that afternoon.

Suspect Arrested In Gaston County Stabbing

(Ranlo, NC) -- One suspect is in custody for a Gaston County stabbing. A man was reportedly stabbed close to 20 times inside a Monterey Park Drive home in Ranlo yesterday afternoon. Ranlo police officers found the suspect armed with a rifle. They say he was ordered to drop the rifle four times before he finally complied. It's unclear how the victim is doing at the hospital.

Charlotte Native Dies On Ohio Interstate

(Cleveland, OH) -- A Charlotte native and girlfriend of a Cleveland Browns player is dead after being hit by a car. Petara Cordero and defensive end Chris Smith were on the side of Interstate 90 in Cleveland early yesterday morning after a tire blew on Smith's car. Officers say a driver hit Cordero while she stood on the shoulder of the highway. Smith grew up in Rowan County.

University City Business Park Murder Suspect Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is now charged in the shooting death of a man in a University City business park. The CMPD says the victim was found shot inside his car on Classic Drive just off IBM Drive in late August. Antonio Meadows was charged on five counts including murder yesterday. He was already in Union County jail on unrelated charges.

Panthers Look For First Win Tonight

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers kick off week two of the NFL season tonight at Bank of America Stadium. Carolina hosts the Tampa Bay Bucs in the first NFC South division game for either team. The Panthers are coming off an opening loss to the Rams, while Tampa fell to San Francisco on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 8:20 tonight.

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem police officer is okay after he was allegedly attacked by a suspect who was involved in a fight. The officer was called to the Biscuitville on Robinhood Road yesterday morning. The suspect is accused of attacking the officer, who had to use a taser to bring him down. Police say the suspect, who was banned from the restaurant, also threatened the manager with a knife. It's unclear what charges are being filed.

Greensboro Police Officer Resigns After DWI Charge

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro police officer is resigning following his arrest for DWI. Officer Brenton Douglas resigned from his position on August 28th. Just days earlier, he was arrested for driving drunk and crashing his car at the Battleground North Apartments. It is not clear whether Douglas' resignation is linked to the charges.

Medicaid Enrollment Extended

(Raleigh, NC) -- The deadline to enroll for Medicaid is being extended three months, because of the effects of Hurricane Dorian. The state Department of Health and Human Services is extending the enrollment period in 27 counties to December 13th. The original deadline was this Friday.
