Fire Crews Rescue A Dozen On French Broad River

(Asheville, NC) -- A number of rescues on the French Broad River are being reported in Asheville. Fire department officials told WLOS-TV that emergency crews helped a dozen people who were stranded near the I-26 bridge make it safely back to shore Sunday afternoon. Some of the rescued were tubing, while others were on rafts and kayaks. No injuries were reported.

Asheville Shooting Suspect Arrested After Two-Plus Months

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville shooting suspect is out of jail after his recent arrest. WLOS-TV reports the man was just arrested in Mooresville and brought back to Buncombe County's detention center, where he posted bail. Investigators had been looking for the suspect for over two-months. He was wanted for three shootings in Asheville's Shiloh community in mid-June.

Mitchell County Schools Resume Classroom Instruction

(Mitchell County, NC) -- In-person instruction is resuming today for most of Mitchell County Schools. The entire district shut down classrooms last week in order to fully quarantine amid rising COVID cases. Bowman Middle and Gouge Elementary schools will wait just a bit longer, with a return expected on Thursday. Face masks are required for students and staff.

State Ranks Last For Wages, Worker Protections

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina is considered to be at the bottom of the barrel for wages and worker protections, according to a recent study. The national charity organization Oxfam America just compiled data on wage policies, worker protection policies and right-to-unionize standards for all 50 states plus Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. North Carolina was listed last overall. A senior researcher told the News and Observer that the Tar Heel State provides very little especially for women at work and low-wage working women of color.

Pedestrian Killed On Asheville Highway

(Asheville, NC) -- The highway patrol is investigating a deadly pedestrian accident in Asheville. A 27-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car on New Leicester Highway early Monday morning. Conditions on the highway at the time of the accident were reportedly rainy. Troopers haven't filed charges against the driver.

Nonprofit Helping WNC Immigrant Community

(Asheville, NC) -- A western North Carolina non-profit is seeking to provide health equity in the immigrant community. The Citizen-Times reports Hola Carolina recently received a grant worth over 300-thousand-dollars to help in the initiative. It will make collaborating with other area organizations more possible.

Teen Charged In Triple Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- A young teen is the main suspect in a Queen City deadly shooting. One person died and two others were injured when shots were fired at the Trinity Place Apartments Sunday night. A 14-year-old is being held at a juvenile detention facility.

Rally Expected For Face Masks At Union County Meeting

(Union County, NC) -- A group is expected to rally outside the Union County school board meeting this evening to urge for a face mask requirement. Members are expected to discuss a COVID-19 update at the session. The rally comes after more than five-thousand students were placed in quarantine last week due to positive cases or close contact.

Police Seek North Charlotte Murder Suspect

(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators are on the lookout for a suspect wanted in an art studio homicide in north Charlotte. A woman died after she was shot at a building on East 22nd Street early Monday morning. WSOC-TV says the building is used as a studio, among other things. Malek Moore is facing murder, burglary and kidnapping charges.

EPA Investigating Catawba Paper Mill Again

(Catawba, SC) -- A paper mill in Catawba is once again under the microscope of the EPA. The agency ordered New Indy to reduce its use of hydrogen sulfide in May after complaints from area residents about a foul odor coming from its plant. NBC Charlotte now reports that New Indy informed the EPA of increased emissions connected to the process of converting wood into paper. This is reportedly in violation of the agency's emergency order with the company.Travel Numbers Back Up At CLT

(Charlotte, NC) -- Travel at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is reaching near pre-pandemic levels. Airport officials were expecting 24-thousand people to pass through security checkpoints on Labor Day, which was slightly lower than numbers in 2019. Nationwide numbers were trending just ten-percent less than two-years ago, barring the official totals from yesterday.

Violent Auto Crash Sends Six To The Hospital In Raleigh

(Raleigh, NC) -- At least six people had to be rushed to the hospital following a violent crash between a pickup truck and an SUV in Raleigh. It happened around 5:30 pm Monday on a bridge that crosses over Crabtree Creek near Global Street. Authorities say three children and two adults from one vehicle received serious injuries. An adult in the second vehicle was also hurt. Two small dogs, both of them Chihuahuas, were killed in the crash. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Labor Day Celebrations Expected To Fuel Spread Of COVID-19 Across North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- State health officials are worried about the prospects of more rapid spread of COVID-19 following a Labor Day weekend that saw numerous large social gatherings. Many of the outings were attended by people who were unmasked and unvaccinated. HHS reported that as of Friday, some 38-hundred coronavirus patients were being treated at hospitals statewide, 930-of them were in ICU.

Wake County Parents Hold Virtual Meeting To Demand More Action Be Taken By School Board To Fight The Spread Of COVID

(Wake County, NC) -- Dozens of concerned parents of children enrolled in the Wake County School District held a virtual meeting Monday night. The group called on members of the Wake County Board of Education to draft a more comprehensive and uniform safety policy to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in schools. The parents also said they want the District to use unspent funds from the CARES Act to pay for equipment like commercial grade air filters, masks, testing and vaccinations. The Board is scheduled to meet this afternoon at 5:30.

Rocky Mount Woman Shot And Wounded In Drive-By Outside Restaurant

(Rocky Mount, NC) -- A North Carolina woman is recovering from injuries sustained in an apparent drive-by shooting outside a restaurant in Rocky Mount over the weekend. It happened around 3:am in front of the 'Cook Out' restaurant on North Weslyan Boulevard. According to police reports, multiple shots were fire by suspects riding in a moving vehicle. Investigators believe the shooting was targeted. The victim's injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

Swimmers Advised To Stay Out Of Water During Rip Current Warnings

(Coastal North Carolina, NC) -- Rip current warnings will remain in effect today through Thursday for parts of coastal North Carolina, as swells from Hurricane Larry in the Atlantic Ocean could cause dangerous conditions. This, after at least 30-people were rescued over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The National Weather Service says life-threatening rip currents and swells could worsen later this week in North Carolina.

Students To Return To Mount Tabor High After Deadly Shooting

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Students will return to Mount Tabor High School today, following last week's deadly shooting. Fifteen-year-old William Miller Junior was shot on campus last Wednesday afternoon. Parents and students spent time yesterday making inspirational signs and taping gold and blue hearts to lockers. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office will also have additional support deputies on hand to ensure everyone feels safe. The suspect is in custody.

Elderly Man Killed In Browns Summit Fire

(Browns Summit, NC) -- An elderly man is dead after his house in Browns Summit caught fire. The blaze started around 7 a.m. Monday on Locust Grove Drive. Thirty firefighters responded to the scene and quickly put out the flames. Seventy-five-year-old Alvis Brown was rushed to a local hospital where he died. Two other people were seriously injured. The house is also believed to be a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Suspect Wanted In Greensboro Robbery

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are looking for the suspect who robbed a local convenience store. The robbery happened around 9 a.m. Monday at the Handy Quick Stop Market on East Cone Boulevard. The suspect took off with an undisclosed amount of cash. He's described as Black, about five-foot-nine and slender. He was wearing black shorts, and black, red and white tennis shoes. Anyone with information is urged to call police.

NC Bill Bans Modification Of Pickup Trucks

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new law is banning certain modifications of pickup trucks in North Carolina. House Bill 692 will do away with height adjustments of the trucks known as the "Carolina Squat." Some believe it's dangerous because the driver is not able to see vehicles in front of the truck. The penalty is mandatory revocation of a license for at least one year. The new bill goes into effect on December 1st.
