(Asheville, NC) -- More than half-a-million people have voted in North Carolina so far. Latest numbers from the State Board of Elections show over 465-thousand people have filled out a ballot in one-stop early voting, while nearly 65-thousand have mailed theirs in. Turnout in the mountain region is around eight-percent for many counties.

Student Injured In Fall At Sylva School

(Sylva, NC) -- A western North Carolina student is being treated for injuries suffered in a school accident. Jackson County public school officials say a seventh grader fell from a second-floor railing in the lobby of Scotts Creek School in Sylva. He was flown by helicopter to Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Two WNC Towns Featured In Amazon Show

(Marshall, NC) -- Two mountain towns are featured on new sci-fi show on Amazon Prime. WLOS-TV reports filming took place in Marshall and Burnsville for The Peripheral. Yancey County's planner said it's a good thing when attention gets brought to your communities and puts you out there to a wider audience. The show debuted last Friday.

Brush Fires Threaten Mountains

(Asheville, NC) -- Dry weather in the Asheville area has caused some trouble recently. A fire department spokesman told the Citizen-Times that crews have responded to four brush fires since October 12th. Residents and visitors are being asked not to burn anything outside and not to discard smoking materials outdoors.

Marion Seeks Funds To Clean Up Old Plant Site

(Marion, NC) -- The city of Marion wants federal help to clean up the former Drexel Heritage Plant site. WLOS-TV reports the city council is applying for a half-million-dollar grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. Underground storage tanks and debris need to be moved before the land can be used for other purposes. Contaminated soil will also be replaced with fresh dirt.

Red Cross Container Damaged In Fire

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville investigators are trying to figure out what caused an early Tuesday morning fire. Flames damaged an American Red Cross storage container off Edgewood Road. No one was hurt.

Funding Shortage Reported For Affordable Housing Projects

(Charlotte, NC) -- A number of Charlotte affordable housing developments are in jeopardy due to funding shortages. WSOC-TV reports there's a funding gap of more than 30-million-dollars for eleven projects that total nearly 900-units. Charlotte's Housing Trust Fund has under seven-million-dollars left.

Leaders are in the process of submitting information in hopes of having the Logan neighborhood placed on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. The community is being asked to submit photos and memories associated with the neighborhood. One historian told WCNC documenting memories and value of place to the local community are critical.

Couple Sentenced For Stealing From Booster Club

(Charlotte, NC) -- A husband and wife are going to prison for stealing from a Charlotte are high school's booster club. Anthony Sharper was serving as the club's chair at South Mecklenburg High when he and his wife spent close to 240-thousand-dollars stolen from booster money. Investigators say he also obtained money from fake applications submitted for COVID relief funding. Sharper was sentenced this week to 30-months, while his wife received 21-months.

Two Stanly County Schools Close Over Illnesses

(Stanly County, NC) -- Two schools in Stanly County are closed for the next couple of days due to illness. South Stanly Middle and Aquadale Elementary schools will shut down today and tomorrow after a large amount of absences because of respiratory sicknesses. Close to 30-percent of Aquadale's kids were out yesterday. The schools were already scheduled to be closed on Friday and Monday.

Father Arrested After Wreck Kills Toddler Son

(Statesville, NC) -- A man is facing charges in a deadly wreck that killed his son in Statesville. The three-year-old was killed when his family's van overturned on East Broad Street early Tuesday morning. Investigators say the child's father was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle. The toddler was also not restrained properly.

Hornets Take On Knicks Tonight

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Hornets are looking after their third win in the first four games of the season tonight. Charlotte is traveling to take on the Knicks in New York. The Knicks have the same record as Charlotte at two-and-one. Three Hornets' starters are questionable for the game.

High School Student Arrested In Cumberland County After Found On Campus With A Handgun

(Cumberland County, NC) -- A Cumberland County student was arrested Tuesday for being in possession of a handgun. It happened around 3 p.m. on the campus of Terry Sanford High School. Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a weapon at the school and arrived to find the student had an unloaded 9mm Kahr handgun and seven loose bullets in his fanny pack. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident. The Cumberland County Department of Juvenile Justice will determine the next course of action for the student.

Defense Attorneys Appeal DA's Efforts To Have 17-Year Old Murder Suspect Tried As An Adult

(Orange County, NC) -- Attorneys representing a 17-year old charged with murdering two Orange County teenagers last month, are appealing the District Attorney's efforts to have his case transferred to a state Superior Court. This, after the unidentified juvenile appeared for a procedural hearing on Tuesday. The appeal is expected to take another 10-days before a ruling is handed down in the case.

Man Struck And Killed By Pickup Truck While Walking Along Road In Raleigh

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police in Raleigh are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by the driver of a pickup truck who also crashed into a tree. According to the accident report, the adult male was walking along Fox Road near Terrace Park Court around 5:pm, when he was suddenly hit by the truck that veered off the road. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died. The driver and a passenger inside the truck were also injured.

Governor Cooper Orders State To Begin Purchasing Zero Emissions Large Commercial Vehicles

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper signed an executive order Tuesday, requiring the state to develop new policies that would mandate a certain number of future purchases of commercial vehicles have zero emissions. Speaking at the North American headquarters of ABB Electric Equipment, the governor said the new policy would help reduce fossil fuel emissions caused by medium and heavy-duty state-owned commercial vehicles. Cooper's order instructs the Department of Environmental Quality to propose the Advanced Clean Trucks Program to the Environmental Management Commission by next May.

A special pre-sale event began for season ticket members on October 18th. At last check, the cheapest tickets were going for 271-dollars on Ticketmaster. The highest priced tickets were selling for around 12-hundred.

Nurse Arrested for Administering Lethal Doses of Insulin

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem nurse has been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges for allegedly giving two patients lethal doses of insulin. Jonathan Hayes worked for Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center until Tuesday when he was arrested for the crimes, which happened in January. A third patient received a near-fatal dose but survived. The Forsyth County D-A says no one helped Hayes in the alleged incidents and there's no evidence he knew any of the patients, who were all in their early 60s.

Police Used Tear Gas, Pepper Spray to Diffuse Rowdy Crowd

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro Police officers say they had to use pepper spray and tear gas to disperse a rowdy crowd at an apartment party. Some people in the crowd early Tuesday morning also threw large rocks and bottles at the officers, damaging several police cars. The "block party" was reported at The Province Apartments on Houston Street. No one was hurt.

Students Dismissed from Class Early Due to Smoke in their School

(High Point, NC) -- No one has been hurt in an incident where smoke filled the Johnson Street Global Studies Elementary School Tuesday. The High Point students were dismissed from class but were expected to do remote learning for the rest of the day. Responding firefighters say the smoke came from a small fire in a mechanical room.

Inaugural Drink and Dine Downtown Set for November 19th

(High Point, NC) -- A structured gathering to encourage downtown activity and social interaction is planned for November 19th in High Point. Promoters say people who attend the first-ever Drink and Dine event will be able to walk to businesses within the so-named Social District to try samples of food and drinks and to shop while they're doing so. Proceeds will benefit Jaycees community service projects and local non-profit organizations.

Nearly 200 People Receive State's Highest Honor for Public Service

(Raleigh, NC) -- A business manager at Winston-Salem State University has received the state's highest honor for public service. Tiffany Turner Lynch was one of over 180 people recognized in a ceremony Tuesday in Raleigh. Her peers nominated her for her work on an online portal that makes it easier to file public service requests, as well as creating the first-ever Ethics and Compliance Week for the department.
